Ahead of the IPL auction which is slated to take place next month, Gautam Gambhir the two-time IPL winning captain, could be released by his franchise Delhi Daredevils. As per a report published in The Mumbai Mirror, Gambhir is in the possible drop list of the franchise. The left-handed Delhi batsman had made his homecoming to the team after being bought by them for an amount of Rs 2.80 Crore in the auction.
Under his captaincy, Delhi Daredevils failed to deliver at the initial stages and lost first five of their six games. Gambhir then decided to step down as the captain and handed over the reins to Shreyas Iyer. He wasn’t given a chance to be a part of the playing XI after he stepped down as the captain.
Ricky Ponting, the head coach of the franchise, stated that Gambhir had himself decided to sit out. However, the former DD captain revealed that he never dropped himself from the playing XI.
He had told ABP news that he never dropped himself from the playing XI and if that was the case, he would have announced the retirement as well and that their is still a lot of cricket left in him.
The comments of Gambhir were a very clear indication that he was dropped from the side and going into the auction for the 2019 edition, he looks all set to be released as well.
The report in The Mumbai Mirror also added that Glenn Maxwell, Chris Morris and Jason Roy are the other players who could be released. The former two were bought for huge amounts of Rs 9 Crore and 11 Crore respectively but they failed to deliver. Morris had to pulled out of the tournament mid-way and was replaced by Junior Dala.
It has already been confirmed that Chennai Super Kings have released Mark Wood, Kanishk Seth and Kshitiz Sharma whereas Kolkata Knight Riders have decided to send Mitchell Starc back in the auction pool.
