Amaal Mallik Opens Up on Money Disputes with His Mother, Unpaid Dues from Producers
Composer Amaal Mallik says he faces friction with his mother over his spending habits, reveals he's owed Rs. 25 lakh by big producers

Popular music composer Amaal Mallik is back in the spotlight — not for a new track, but for his candid views on money, family, and the challenges of the industry. In a recent conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Amaal opened up about his personal struggles, his spending style, and why his mother disapproves of how he manages finances.
Amaal Mallik on Financial Clashes with His Mother
Amaal, known for composing hits across Bollywood, shared that even though he was a brilliant accounts student in school, his financial decisions often create tension with his mother.
“My mother has a very different relationship with money. She will never understand why the dinner bill is 20k or why I suddenly spent a lakh rupees in a single day,” he said during the podcast.
“I am very transparent with my dad about what I spend, but I have to be careful around my mother, because she gets upset about my expenses.”
The composer explained that his spending comes from a place of generosity, especially after performances or outings with friends.
“Sometimes you are going to a party after a show, or I am taking my people out, so I spend a good amount. I am a very generous person in that sense; I don’t feel like I have to hold on to a lot of money.”
Amaal said he understands his mother’s perspective, considering her financial struggles growing up.
“She was down to the last Rs 500,” he recalled, referencing the family’s difficult past and his father’s failed music career.
Unpaid Dues and the Music Industry’s Reality
Beyond personal issues, Amaal also talked about the professional setbacks he has faced — particularly, unpaid dues from producers in the music industry.
“There are a lot of big producers who won’t clear almost 40% of your payment, but smaller producers who don’t even have budgets don’t do this,” he said.
He revealed that he is still owed around Rs. 25 lakh, but chooses not to pursue it.
“As long as there is intent, I don’t mind working with them. It doesn’t matter because God has been kind, and you can make this in one night and one performance.”
This isn’t the first time Amaal has been in the headlines for personal reasons. Earlier this year, he made news for publicly distancing himself from his parents, a decision he later walked back. The recent podcast once again sheds light on the emotional and financial complexities artists like him face beyond the stage.
