Salman Khan’s Battle of Galwan Faces Chinese Media Backlash

Salman Khan’s upcoming film Battle of Galwan has sparked a fresh debate after its teaser attracted sharp criticism from Chinese media. The film is based on the 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh.

The teaser was released on Salman Khan’s 60th birthday and quickly went viral, crossing 60 million views across social media platforms. It shows Indian Army soldiers preparing to face the People’s Liberation Army, backed by patriotic music and strong dialogues highlighting courage and sacrifice.

China’s state-run newspaper Global Times called the film propaganda and claimed it exaggerates facts. The report quoted so-called Chinese experts and social media users who questioned the film’s portrayal, costumes, and depiction of the harsh conditions shown in the teaser.

Indian Government Defends Creative Freedom

Responding to the criticism, Indian government sources said that cinema is a form of artistic expression and India does not restrict filmmakers from telling stories inspired by real events. Officials pointed out that India has a long history of making war-based films, including movies on the 1962 India-China war and other historic battles.

In the film, Salman Khan plays Bikkumalla Santosh Babu, who laid down his life along with 19 other soldiers during the Galwan clash. He was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his bravery.

The Galwan Valley clash on June 15, 2020, marked a major turning point in India-China relations. Twenty Indian soldiers were martyred, while China officially acknowledged the deaths of five of its soldiers in 2021, though the actual number is believed to be higher.

Produced by Salman Khan and his mother Salma Khan, Battle of Galwan is scheduled to release in theatres on April 17.
