Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Gets 48V Mild Hybrid System Globally — Will It Come to India?

Toyota has introduced a significant update to its globally sold Land Cruiser Prado by equipping it with a 48V mild hybrid system. The new setup is part of the carmaker’s initiative to bring electrified enhancements to its diesel vehicles. As confirmed by Toyota, all Land Cruiser variants sold in Europe will now come standard with this mild-hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) tech.
Same Diesel Power, Now Electrified
Under the hood, the Prado continues with the familiar 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that produces 204hp and 500Nm of torque. However, the addition of the 48V mild hybrid system adds another layer of refinement and fuel efficiency. This system includes a motor-generator, a 4.3Ah lithium-ion battery, and a DC-DC converter.
The mild hybrid unit is lightweight at just 7.6kg and replaces the conventional alternator. It offers up to 16hp and 65Nm of extra torque during initial acceleration and supports features like auto start-stop. The battery charges through energy recuperation during engine braking.
Notably, the same diesel engine also powers the Toyota Fortuner in India, which recently received this mild-hybrid tech.
Off-Road Capabilities Remain Intact
Toyota has ensured that the new hybrid elements don’t compromise the Prado’s legendary off-road performance. The 700mm water wading depth remains unchanged, thanks to a high-mounted and waterproof motor-generator.
In rough terrain, the hybrid motor supplements traction and control, further aiding performance. A multi-information display in the cabin shows live status such as CHG (charging), ECO, or PWR modes depending on hybrid usage.
India Launch Possibility
While there’s no official launch date, Toyota has hinted at the Land Cruiser Prado (LC 250) making its way to India later this year. If launched, it will be positioned below the larger Land Cruiser LC 300 and compete in the luxury SUV segment.
Stay tuned for further updates as Toyota continues to electrify its lineup across markets.
