The ₹27 Crore Gamble Fails: Rishabh Pant Steps Down as LSG Captain

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Rishabh Pant have officially parted ways in terms of leadership after the wicketkeeper-batter stepped down as captain following a disappointing IPL 2026 season.

The franchise confirmed that Pant approached the management with a request to relinquish the captaincy, a request that has now been accepted. The decision comes after LSG finished at the bottom of the IPL 2026 points table, managing just four wins from 14 matches.

LSG Accepts Pant’s Request

LSG Director of Cricket Tom Moody confirmed the development, stating that the franchise respects Pant’s decision and appreciates his contribution as captain.

According to Moody, the team is now focused on rebuilding and restructuring its setup as it aims to return to competing at the highest level in future seasons.

A Record-Breaking Move That Didn’t Deliver

Pant joined Lucknow Super Giants ahead of IPL 2025 in a record-breaking ₹27 crore deal after spending eight seasons with Delhi Capitals. He was immediately appointed captain and expected to lead a new era for the franchise.

However, results failed to match expectations. In IPL 2025, Pant scored 269 runs, including an unbeaten century, while LSG finished seventh. The following season brought only a marginal improvement with 312 runs in 13 innings, but the team’s overall performance declined sharply, ending with a last-place finish.

End of a Two-Year Leadership Experiment

Before Pant’s arrival, LSG were captained by KL Rahul from 2022 to 2024. Under Rahul, the franchise reached the playoffs twice before finishing seventh in his final season.

Seeking a fresh start, LSG invested heavily in Pant and handed him the captaincy. However, after two underwhelming campaigns, the leadership partnership has come to an end.

Who Could Be LSG’s Next Captain?

Lucknow Super Giants have several leadership options within their squad. Aiden Markram has captaincy experience with Durban Super Giants in SA20 and Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred. Mitchell Marsh currently leads Australia’s T20I side, while Nicholas Pooran has enjoyed captaincy success with MI New York in Major League Cricket.

With Pant stepping aside, the franchise is expected to evaluate its options carefully before naming a new captain for IPL 2027.

Looking Ahead

As LSG enters a crucial rebuilding phase, the appointment of a new captain will be one of the franchise’s most important decisions ahead of the next season. For Pant, stepping down could provide an opportunity to focus solely on his batting and return to his best form.
