Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has marked a significant achievement with the activation of 501 4G sites in Karnataka as part of its 4G saturation and phase 9.2 project. This development is a critical step towards closing connectivity gaps in rural areas, offering high-speed internet to underserved regions. BSNL shared this update in a post on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting its commitment to improving rural connectivity.
Performance Monitoring for Enhanced 4G Rollout
In a nationwide push to expand 4G coverage, BSNL successfully deployed 10,000 4G sites in July as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative. The telecom operator is working closely with Indian companies to achieve this ambitious rollout.
Newly appointed telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has announced that the telecom department is establishing a performance monitoring unit (PMU) to oversee BSNL’s 4G rollout progress. The PMU will set daily targets to ensure the expansion stays on track and meets its objectives.
Upcoming BSNL 4G Services in Chennai
In addition to its efforts in Karnataka, BSNL is gearing up to launch 4G services in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts under the Phase 9.2 project. The plan includes the installation of 2,114 4G towers, further extending BSNL’s network reach.
While BSNL promotes its tariffs as the most affordable in the market, a recent CNBC report suggested that BSNL’s 4G services might take another year to become fully operational, according to a statement made by the government in Parliament on July 24.
Preparation for 5G
In a move towards future-proofing its services, the Department of Telecom (DoT) shared an image of a 5G-ready BSNL SIM card on X, indicating the company’s preparation for rolling out 4G/5G services in the near future.
Free 4G SIM Upgrades
For customers still using 2G or 3G SIM cards, BSNL is offering a free upgrade to 4G SIMs, along with 4GB of complimentary data to experience the enhanced network. This offer is valid until March 25, 2025, as announced by BSNL Karnataka on X.
With these strategic developments, BSNL is making significant strides in expanding its network and preparing for the next generation of mobile connectivity.
