Eminem Files $109 Million Lawsuit Against Meta for Copyright Infringement

Grammy-winning rapper Eminem has filed a $109 million lawsuit against Facebook’s parent company Meta, accusing it of unauthorized use of his music across its platforms. The lawsuit, filed by Eminem’s music publishing company Eight Mile Style, alleges that Meta has stored, reproduced, and exploited 243 of Eminem’s songs without proper licensing or attribution.

According to court documents obtained by People, Eight Mile Style claims that Meta’s in-app features like “Original Audio” and “Reels Remix” have encouraged users to add Eminem’s music to their videos, leading to billions of streams and millions of uses. This, the lawsuit states, has diminished the value of the copyrights and caused significant financial losses.

Eight Mile Style is seeking statutory damages of $150,000 per song, per platform (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp), which could total over $109 million. The publisher has also requested a jury trial and a permanent injunction to stop future unauthorized use of Eminem’s music.

Meta’s Response

Meta has not made a direct public comment on the lawsuit but told People that it holds licenses with thousands of partners worldwide and has a comprehensive global music licensing program. A Meta spokesperson said, “Meta had been negotiating in good faith with Eight Mile Style, but rather than continue those discussions, Eight Mile Style chose to sue.”
