R Madhavan on Onscreen Chemistry: ‘You Can’t Write That Into a Script

Madhavan reveals how respect and instinct shaped his bond with Fatima Sana Shaikh in Netflix’s Aap Jaisa Koi

R Madhavan, known for his timeless romantic performances in films like Alaipayuthey and Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, recently opened up about what makes onscreen chemistry click — and why it all starts with the very first meeting between co-stars.

In an interview with Filmfare, the actor reflected on his experience working on the romantic drama Aap Jaisa Koi, currently streaming on Netflix. He revealed that despite years in the industry, the real test of a romantic film begins at the moment he meets his co-star.

“When you do a romantic film, one of the moments of truth for me is when I meet my co-star. You’re hoping and praying that you don’t have to work too much, because chemistry is something you can’t explain. It’s a chemical reaction,” Madhavan said.

The First Meeting with Fatima Sana Shaikh

Recounting his first interaction with co-star Fatima Sana Shaikh, Madhavan described an unplanned yet telling moment that set the tone for their onscreen bond.

“It was a small, cosy room in the Dharma office. We were sitting at a distance, and during the narration, she quietly shuffled over to my side, sat next to me, and just started talking. The comfort level was amazing — unspoken, natural. You can’t write that into a script.”

For Madhavan, emotional connection in romantic roles stems from genuine respect, not just performance.

“It is very important to fall in love with my heroine to be able to give that chemistry. I think the highest form of love is respect; if that’s not there, to kuch bhi nai rahega (then nothing will be there). And that was instinctive for me when I met her.”

About Aap Jaisa Koi

In Aap Jaisa Koi, Madhavan plays Shrenu Tripathi, a 42-year-old man navigating the complexities of adulthood, relationships, and rediscovering love. Fatima Sana Shaikh stars as Madhu Bose, and together, they deliver a tender, emotionally grounded performance that explores companionship, equality, and second chances.

Set against a realistic, everyday backdrop, the film celebrates quiet love — the kind that grows not from dramatic gestures, but from mutual understanding and shared respect.

Aap Jaisa Koi is now streaming on Netflix.
