US President Donald Trump was secretly moved off Air Force One during a trip last month after US intelligence reportedly identified a credible threat that Iran could try to assassinate him.
What makes the incident unusual is how the operation was carried out. Trump was reportedly taken away from the aircraft inside an airport catering truck and transferred to another plane, while more than 100 aides, officials, security personnel and journalists remained on the original aircraft without being told about the threat.
Why Was Trump Moved to Another Plane?
Trump said the Secret Service and the military wanted him to travel on a different aircraft because of a security threat.
Speaking to reporters after returning from an event in Ohio, Trump said he did not feel particularly worried about the threat and suggested that he simply followed the instructions of his security team.
“I guess there was a threat out there,” Trump said, adding that he receives many threats.
According to the Guardian's reporting, however, US intelligence had reportedly identified a credible Iranian threat against Trump. The concern came after the February US-Israeli strikes against Iran that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior Iranian officials.
The Secret Plane Switch
The operation was designed to keep Trump's actual location hidden.
Trump initially boarded Air Force One in view of television cameras. Later, he was secretly taken from the aircraft using a catering truck normally used to deliver meals and other supplies.
The truck transported him to a smaller aircraft, while journalists and some White House staff believed Trump was still traveling with them on the original plane.
This meant the original Air Force One effectively continued as a decoy, with more than 100 people still onboard.
Why Are People Questioning the Decision?
The biggest controversy is not simply that Trump was moved to another aircraft. It is that the other passengers were reportedly not told that the original plane was considered a potential security risk.
Democrats have called for a congressional briefing to determine what precautions were taken to protect the people who remained on the aircraft.
Connecticut senator Richard Blumenthal described the operation as unprecedented and questioned what safety measures were used for the staff and reporters who continued traveling on the plane.
A former CIA intelligence officer also criticized the decision, arguing that protecting the president appeared to have been prioritized while hundreds of people remained unaware of the potential danger.
What Was the Iranian Threat?
The reported threat is connected to Iran's long-running desire for retaliation against Trump and US officials following the killing of Iranian military commander Qassem Suleimani in 2020.
The situation became even more serious after the US-Israeli strikes in February 2026 killed Iran's supreme leader and several other senior officials.
Security experts have warned that Iran's desire for retaliation should not be underestimated, even though questions remain about its ability to carry out a successful attack against Trump on US soil.
Trump Says the Threat Did Not Scare Him
Trump has downplayed the incident, saying he did not ask many questions about the reported threat and that he receives numerous threats.
But the extraordinary security operation tells a different story.
Secretly removing the president from an aircraft, using a catering vehicle to conceal the movement and keeping the original passengers unaware suggests that Trump's security team considered the intelligence serious enough to take unusual precautions.
The incident has now raised a difficult question in Washington: if the threat was serious enough for Trump to leave the plane, why were the other people onboard not told about the danger?
